Helping yourself with Guided Imagery

Imagery, or the use of mental pictures and visualization, has been found to have a significant impact on an individual’s health and well-being. In particular, imagery can be used to help manage stress, reduce pain, and improve physical and mental health.

One way imagery is used in health care is through visualization techniques, which involve creating mental images of a desired outcome or state of well-being.

For example, a person who is suffering from chronic pain may use visualization to imagine their pain decreasing, or someone dealing with a phobia might imagine themselves being able to face their fear without anxiety.

Another way imagery is used is in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which is a form of psychotherapy that helps people change negative patterns of thought and behavior.

One technique used in cognitive-behavioral therapy is called guided imagery, which involves guiding a person through the creation of a positive mental image, such as a peaceful beach or a serene forest, to help them relax and reduce stress.

Imagery can also be used in the treatment of medical conditions. For instance, some people with cancer may use imagery to help them cope with the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy or to boost their immune system.
